Debate League in Hradec Králové
This weekend the first Debate League tournament took place in Hradec Králové. Our team, Le débute, consisting of Sofie Fukalová and Zuzana Klazarová (both Oktáva A), had their first experience with a debate tournament in English. However, we were looking for a third member for the debating because no one from the Nymburk team was available. Viktor Novák from the Nový PORG club joined us and debated all the third speeches.
Overall, we can say that our team did better as proposition, we won all of their affirmative speeches, and lost the negatives either convincingly or 2-1. So overall, we received 8 ballots, finishing 11th out of 20 participating teams.
The prepared motions were two: "Former colonial powers should return objects of cultural or historical significance to their countries of origin" and "All academic output should be freely available". The unprepared one, which we learned an hour before the debate itself, was: 'Before elections, all media companies should give equal amount of exposure to all political candidates'.
Even though we didn't place at the top, we enjoyed the tournament. Biskupské gymnázium, where the tournament took place, had a beautiful interior and thanks to the nice autumn weather we were impressed by Hradec. We spent our Saturday evening with the other teams playing our favorite board game "Secret Hitler".
The Debate League opened our new debate season. Now, the next program of our Tuesday meetings will be to prepare for the Czech tournament, which will take place in Nymburk in November. The motion on academic outputs will be debated there again, so we will try to improve our case and hope for more success already with our full team.
